Managed Service Provider Program Delivers a Bundle of Benefits for a Packaging Client

Client

A leading global manufacturer of protective packaging materials and technologies. This innovative, multi-billion dollar company employs nearly 20,000 people in dozens of countries.

Challenge

This client enlists a large contingent IT workforce to support product creation and marketplace expansion. Before MDI was engaged, the client was working with over a dozen IT staffing vendors to acquire approximately 15 percent of its IT workforce. Without standard vendor rates in place, the client’s IT procurement team faced rising costs, and a very lengthy orientation (on-boarding) process prevented the team from hiring consultants as quickly as the projects required.

Solution

As one of the many existing IT staffing partners, MDI knew first-hand how complex the client’s on-boarding procedures were. MDI worked with the client to critically asses its vendor pool and proposed a vendor-neutral Managed Service Provider (MSP) program to achieve the following objectives:

  • Standardize and streamline processes
  • Alleviate administrative burden for the procurement team
  • Reduce costs

Because MDI’s program is tool independent, the client had the option of using an existing vendor management system (VMS) tool or implementing a tool from one of our VMS partners.

Results

MDI standardized processes and reduced the vendor pool to a few primary suppliers. The program alleviated administrative burden by allowing managers to use an automated VMS tool to obtain best fit IT consultants, conduct interviews and manage budgets with consolidated invoicing. Within the first year of launching the program, MDI filled more than 35 positions including an entire team of PC technicians responsible for technology upgrades at each of the company’s U.S. sites. Overall, the flexible and scalable MSP solution proved to be an efficient and cost-effective way for the client to meet its high-volume IT requirements and manage its staffing vendors.
