MDI creates competency model for business analysts

NORCROSS, GA – MDI, a nationally-known, high growth professional consulting and staffing firm, announces that it has compiled a competency model for business analysts - a first in the industry.

"As more and more firms are relying on outside business analysts to help meet the challenges associated with near term tactical execution and long term strategic planning, it made sense to develop an industry standard to help guide decision makers involved in business analyst selection," said Amy Vasquez, President of MDI Information Technology.

The business analyst competency model was created when MDI executives polled more than 30 business analysts at a recent meeting of the International Institute of Business Analysts.

After the term "competency" was adequately defined by the group, a list of 24 common job competencies was introduced and ranked by the group in terms of importance. Vasquez said that the top eight traits viewed as the most essential for a business analyst to have, ranked in terms of importance, include:

1. Analytical thinking
2. Customer service orientation
3. Integrity
4. Flexibility
5. Curiosity; information seeking 
6. Initiative
7. Conceptual thinking
8. Teamwork and cooperation

"The model that resulted from this exercise will help business analysts focus on developing the most important, valuable and marketable skills and traits, as well as provide the recipients of their services with valid criteria for deciding which professional will benefit their organization the most," said Vasquez. "We have set new standards and have raised the bar."

Vasquez further explained that MDI uses this information to enhance the services provided to clients. As more firms rely on outside firms to provide business analysis, by better understanding these attributes, MDI can offer better screening and retention of these skilled consultants.
