MDI Group Helps Urban Young Adults Prepare for their Future

Driven by the company’s strong philanthropic values, MDI Group regularly encourages its employees to go out into the community to provide help where it’s needed most. Recently, MDI was introduced by a client to the organization Year Up. After attending a breakfast hosted by the organization earlier this year, 10 MDI team members had the opportunity this December to attend a Year Up Atlanta event to help inner-city young adults prepare for future interviews.

Year Up is a nationwide nonprofit organization that has served over 17,500 low income 18-to-24-year-old students in an effort to overcome the “opportunity divide.” This divide, caused by social and economic injustice, results in a lack of access to higher education and valuable careers for talented and motivated young adults. The Year Up one-year program begins with hands-on skills development in the technical and professional fields, followed by a six-month professional internship with a local company.

MDI Group team members attended an event with 100 young adults who had just finished their first business internships. The MDI team spent the day coaching them on interview techniques and providing resume tips to prepare them for the next step in their careers. The Year Up program is highly successful, with 90 percent of graduates employed or enrolled in postsecondary education within just four months of completing the program.

“It was clear that the kids were really excited and grateful for the opportunity to have people help them grow in their careers,” commented Chris Cain, Chief Sales Officer at MDI, who attended the Year Up event. “There was a great sense of satisfaction among the MDI team in being able to give back to this group of people. We’re used to dealing with highly experienced professionals who have multiple opportunities open to them on a daily basis, so it was refreshing to get a new perspective from people who were thirsting for the advice we were able to give.”

MDI is excited to serve their local communities on a regular basis, providing time and money to the organizations such as Year Up that are helping people thrive.
